This course is recommended for professionals and students who are interested to understand and learn about geographic information system or GIS. No technical background necessary! This can also serve as a refresher course for those who haven’t been practicing GIS for a long time.

This course aims to provide in-depth understanding on the basic concepts and theories in geographic information system (GIS) and equip participants with necessary skills to perform some basic GIS applications.
Hands-on exercises are included with the goal of familiarizing participants on how to deal with real-life geospatial problems using free and open-source GIS software.
This manual is divided into 6 modules:
Module 1 discusses the basic concepts and theories in GIS as a science, art, and as an indispensable tool for decision-making.
Module 2 familiarizes the participants with the free and open-source software, QGIS, i.e. the graphic user interface and functionalities.
Modules 3 and 4 provides a step-by-step guide on how to carry out georeferencing and perform subsequent digitizing.
The last section, Module 5, discusses the basic elements of a map and provides detailed procedure on producing a basic map layout. The overall objective is that, at the end of this module, the participants will be able to generate their own maps from scratch.
